The A-scale banjo is tuned to A. Its neck is two frets shorter, ending where you would normally put a capo on a G-tuned banjo. A-scale banjos are useful when you often play with a fiddler. Fiddlers are very fond of playing in A.
The banjo therefore takes up a little less space and may be a little handier. Although an A-scale banjo is shorter, it can still be tuned to G.
